Halloween is such a weird time for Christians. Do we dress up and participate in this event, or do we stand firm in what our churches have told us and “steer clear”. I am of the persuasion that Halloween is just another day, it is no different than anyother day unless we make it different. My children dress up for Halloween, they trick or treat, they enjoy the fun of this day, yet at the same time it is a great opportunity to minister to their hearts on a very spiritual level.
I was listening to our christian radio station yesterday morning while taking Emma to school, like I always do, when I heard a great analogy. Halloween offers us the opportunity to share with our children that God see’s through our costumes to the real person on the inside. For the longest time Elijah wouldnt wear a costume because it scared him to look so different than what he did on an every day basis, he cried when we would go pick out halloween costumes and would end up wearing camo pants and a green t-shirt almost every year because that wasnt so far out of his ordinary. We grabbed that opportunity and shared with him a christian application to halloween. Even though the ghosts and monsters are scary looking, God knows what is underneath.
So this year, we will dress up and we will enjoy what, atleast to us, is another family fun day- and we will teach our children a christian application for a day that the world- and Christians- have turned into something far worse than it has to be. Its all in what you make it. I encourage you to take the time today to share a biblical application to Halloween with your children. I encourage you to make today a family day, take it back and use it for Christs Glory!
