Date Night and Radiation Consult…

First, my apologies for not updating last night, I know that many of you are out with your families right now!

I had my radiation consult yesterday afternoon, as you know. It went rather well, honestly. He went over the side effects of radiation (losing your hair, nausea, fatigue). And then a strange thing happened. He used the “cure” word! My mom asked him if he expected a cure for me, and he said verbatim “Thats what she is here for, is it not?” We smiled, and agreed that we liked him alot!

I was fitted for the mask, and had a ct scan done, which wasnt bad. He said that he would take my mri’s from the local hospital and pin point the margins from that, if he could. If not, I will have to have another MRI next week. He said that I should expect to start not this week, but next, which is good because Emma has transplant clinic in Gainesville next Thursday. He said that the treatments would be 6 weeks (for 5 days) and last 15 minutes.

So we left there a little lighter, and with smiles on our faces. I really really like this oncologist and his staff.

Then Mark and I went on a double date with Shay and Michelle from Marks work. We had dinner at Applebees, followed with Icecream from ColdStone. We decided to walk around, because our movie wasn’t starting for 45 minutes. We ran into a group from a Non-Denominational church and started talking (well, they started talking!) They were there witnessing to the teens around them. Towards the end of the conversation the man pulled out his cell phone and said “Mark, let me ask you a question, You have 3 minutes to lead me to the Lord because I have a knife in my back. Can you do it?” I stood there in awe of my husband, and his knowledge of the bible and the salvation story. He presented the gospel so very well!

We then went to the Movie “Pirates of the Carribean, At Worlds End” were I slept thru the entire thing, honestly!

It was good to get out, and do normal things. It was good to be with friends. It was good to not think about my situation for an evening. Today I woke up with a new resolve, for lack of a better word. The consultations are behind us, and we have a game-plan. I am very well versed in my care, I have my family around me, and most of all I have my Savior beside me.

Who could ask for anything more…

So glad to hear that your doctor is so optimistic! I am sure that the “Great Physician” is even more so!
You will feel like you have earned a doctorate degree when this is all over. I joke with my doctor all the time now that I can be his assistant since I know so much.
I understand the emotional part too. That was the hardest to deal with. Also some of the chemo drugs can exacerbate that. Sometimes it helps to know that that is where it is coming from. I am so glad to see that you have so many praying for you. I count it as a priviledge to add my name to the list.

  14. Oh, Heather – the “CURE” word! God had definitely given you the right oncologist! I love his attitude! I have prayed for complete healing for you but the word “cure” sounds more powerful. My prayers will continue. I’ll also pray for your strength and health as you begin your treatments. I’m so glad you got out with your husband and friends. It must have felt so good to just do normal, fun stuff. You sure needed it, even if you slept through a Johnny Depp movie!

  23. Rebekah says:

I’m continuing to pray you through Heather. I’m unknown to you, but my heart has been lead to pray and continue to pray for you, your children and the rest of the family. I have been blessed to hear of your new prognosis and look forward to hearing good news in the future. You ask why? I can’t say I know all, but I’d like to say that the testimony you have from all you and your family have been through, your love, compassion and willingness to give God the glory even through your hard times will be ministering to many people as it does right at this moment to many across the world. Love breaks barriers. What you’ve shown even through the midst of your own valley is Christ. It’s what every Christian should be doing. Sharing the love of Christ and being willing and humble even through the midst of sorrow and sadness to give God the glory. Your doing that. Even though sometimes you ask why, your doing it. There are many in the Bible who asked those same questions.

Anyways, in the midst of all this medical chaos your going through and the emotions that go through your head. I thought I’d let you know that you are loved abundantly and to spite where you are right now, maybe there’s no answer to your question why, other than someone somewhere right now has been fed by the Spirit and feels the love of Christ through the sharing you’ve done.

God bless you sister. I pray He gives you strength to push through that thorn in your side, help where there is a need, and may He hold you all up during this valley. I know He is faithful!

    Rebekah

  24. Heather, you are my new hero! Your trust & faith humbles me over & over again. God is being glorified even in the midst of uncertainty!

    Hugs from Texas!

  29. Someday…when you are both old and gray I’ll be reading your blog and remembering these trying times. You’ll write about the “date” you just had with Mark. Of how the seniors group from your church had a speaker in and then went out for an early bird special at the local restaurant. How you looked around the table at the silver hair and wrinkles and smiled at each other with a knowing that only the two of you will really understand. Smiling at the goodness of our God that saw you through the waters and the fire… How beautiful those wrinkles and those years will be carried on your shoulders…
    …someday…
    …still praying and rejoicing!…
    Cheryl
