Biopsy Results…
June 3, 2008
The biopsy indicated that it wasn’t rejection (If you are familiar with heart transplant biopsies, it was a 0), so that leaves viral infection (which we wont get the results back for atleast two weeks, and even then it isn’t conclusive) or Coronary Artery Disease. The true test will be how she handles coming off Milrinone and lasix tomorrow. We will know Thursday when they do an ECHO.
If she crashes and burns (meaning if her heart goes back to the way it was when she came in Friday), that means that her coronary arteries are worse and they will put her back on Milrinone, which means she wont be coming home until her heart function improves off of this drug, and it may not improve this time. Last time she did this in 2006, she was in the hospital for 2 months and worked up for another heart transplant. We have been so blessed these last two years that it has been controlled by medication (Coreg). She is on the maximum dose of this medication for her weight so upping it is not an option.
If her heart remains the way it is right now (her normal baseline), it means that it was viral and we will be going home Thursday night, just in time for her birthday (June 5). Either way, she will be spending her birthday in the hospital. We are hoping for the best Birthday present ever when they do the Echocardiogram.
So, hurry up and wait seems to be the motto of this hospital visit. They were 95% sure it was rejection, so to find out it wasn’t leaves alot of unanswered questions. They are leaning more towards viral infection compared to her Coronaries, but they haven’t ruled out the coronaries either.
So there is the update as promised. Sorry for the long delay, we literally just got the news an hour ago and have been updating family and friends.
Keep praying, We know God isn’t done yet.

Dear Heather,
Thanks for the update! I’ve been checking your blog off an on to see how little Emma is doing. I’ll still be praying for her and that her heart function improves and she can come home. Bless her little heart, she’s such a cutie. I hope you’re all doing well and holding up under the circumstances. God bless.
Molly (:
One step at a time . . . but oh how hard that must be. I’ve just finished re-reading Emma’s story after checking for an update. And now, God bless you, you’ve kept us posted. Thank you so much, Heather. Still praying in California!
I hope your daughter starts to get better soon. My father went through quite a trip as the doctors tried to get rid of his viral infection. They thought he was going through rejection at first but it turned out that his donor heart had CMV (? I always get that wrong) and it was making his body feel as if he had mono times 1000.
My dad his heart transplant the same day I had my first tumor removed last year. We were both in surgery at the same time but at different hospitals.
I’ll keep both you and your daughter in my thoughts and prayers.

I really hope Emma has the best Birthday presant yet.
I am so hoping it is not her coranary arteries. She seemed to get unwell so quickly so am hoping this is just a viral problem, there certainly are a lot of nasty ones around this year. Those of us who are immunosupressed are more at risk than most but it so hard to avoid everything.
Thinking of you all the time.
Lots of Love Carolynn
Well, we’ll just keep praying that it’s a viral infection. Poor little thing! It’s good that it’s not rejection, though, right? Now just to get the coronary artery issue out of the way.
She’ll make it through - she’s a tough little girl from all I’ve read of her!

Heather and Mark -
i live in Tampa and work in St Petersburg.
if you need anything while you’re at ACH/McD house, i can easily drop off - take out dinners? grocery store run? quarters for laundry? DVD rentals? i realize offers from people you dont know can be weird…it’s the least i can do for the blessings i’ve received reading your blog.
thinking of you and your emma throughout the day.
take care, linda
Ohmygoodness! I missed the initial post. My prayers are going up for Emma and your family.
Still praying!
God is good ALL the time and all the time God is good!!!
Heather,
The verse that comes to me is, Trust in the Lord with all thy heart and lean not on your own understanding but in all your ways acknowledge HIM and he will direct your paths!!! Sometimes we don’t know the WHY’s? But HE does and he will take care of Emma Grace and you…he loves her more than anyone and he will answer our prayers concerning her. I am praying for you too, for God’s strength and for peace. You both are miracles!!!
Praying. Man, Heather, you are probably slated to be a boss-lady in heaven. You have dealt with so much! What an honor that God knows He can count on you even when there is “pain in the offering”.
My prayers are with you and yours. Hope your baby girl is home close to her birthday and that all news is good.

I have been praying and will keep on.
I have been praying for you and your family, that you will get have the strength and faith to keep it together, that in this God would grant you peace, that your faith in Him would not waiver, that you would get up again and trust Him.
I cannot imagine how difficult this is for you and your family and little Emma, I have been praying that God would give her peace.
Gods word is truth, He cannot lie and when we depend on Him He just has to show His presence. I am praying that you will see it. I am praying that I will as well as I have to see that He is there as He sais He is, for you, your family for all His children.
