Another Hair Update…

October 9, 2008

Now. You will notice that it is coming in quite nicely on the sides and in the back. Right? Now Look at the top. Not so much. I have hair there, but it is just blonder than all get out. How do I know that I have hair there…. I did what any normal person would do…

I applied mascara to it.

We have tried dying it, but the color just will not stick to the hair. Seriously, we left dye on my head for 1 hour

Nada.
Nothing.
Zip.

So, I still feel like I have an “old man bald spot” on the top of my head, even more so now that it is so noticeable…Every time I walk in front of a mirror I do a double take!

Mark still thinks I am beautiful, and that is all that matters to me

It WILL all come back. I PROMISE. I’ve never met a chemo patient yet that didn’t get it back. I know a LOT of people who shave off that “duck fluff” that you are growing now and then the healthier hair comes in. I know my hair grew back WONKY curly and STEEL GREY. It’s straight again now and blonde (when left alone). Yours will be too– it takes time.

FWIW I think you are beautiful too!

Ok, just tell me it’s WATERPROOF because it’s been raining like crazy in Florida! We can’t have mascara running down your head at the WRONG TIME . . .

Seriously though, you do bald so well! Gorgeous!

Just to give your scalp and growing hair extra protection, use a sensitive skin shampoo until it’s grown in. My doc told me it would take about 7 weeks to grow enough hair to cover my scalp, and we’re not talking luxurious locks here! I am a dishwater blonde nautrally and my first full head of hair came in brown. I never got the curly hair people talked about; I was disappointed–my hair had been stick-straight and baby fine my whole life. I wanted curls I didn’t have to pay for

Your minimal hair coverage certainly plays up your beautiful eyes!

You know, if it stays blonde… how awesome will that look! People pay the big bucks for those funky wedge foils… and yours is just happening!

And I really don’t think you need to worry too much anyways… people would be so mesmerised by your gorgeous green eyes to even notice you hair. I know I was, at any rate.

First of all there are not many people that can pull off bald. You rock that look!!!! On a side note, I nearly pee’d (three months pregnant here) I laughed so hard when I read that you had put mascara on it to show the color. You know that have all kinds of random mascara colors these days. lol.
anyway, you look great and you will have tons of hair before you know it. Thanks for the update.

Heather,
You are beautiful! You are younger than I (57) so I do hope your hair comes in soon. I had WBR about the same time as you, but not as many treatments, and then I had targeted radiation. My head looks very much the same as yours. I asked my oncologist and he said it probably won’t be coming back on top. I keep the rest of it short so its not so noticeable. My hair is mostly gray, with a silly round spot of dark hair at the top in the back. I usually wear a hat or cap when I go somewhere, but sometimes go without. I do enjoy reading your blogs. I have stage 4 breast cancer, but know I am to glorify God and be a blessing to others. I homeschooled my 3 boys all the way through before I got cancer. God bless you and your family.

31 Jamie October 11, 2008 at 7:55 pm

My daughter’s hair has grown back since her radiation and chemo but the spots that the radiation hit are quite a bit lighter than the rest of her dark brown hair. And to top it off she has a few grey hairs in there too. It’s funny but we just say it’s a special highlight. LOL

34 Theresa October 13, 2008 at 10:03 am

I remember going through this with a dear friend. As her hair kept getting longer, though, she was soooo excited! She had always had poker-straight hair, but it grew back in so curly that she could barely get a comb through it. Her hair was really thick on top, but very skimpy along the sides for about 6 months after her last chemo treatment.

I loved this post! My life is so full of moments that I can either laugh at and rise above  or whine and pout about:getlost: . I’ve done my fair share of all of the above this last week and the first option is so much better! Why is it so hard to remember that when I get stuck in the whining rut??? Ugh.

Maybe I’ll try your approach and go put some mascara on my bad attitude. We’ll see what happens!!!

And girl, *props* to you for NOT SMUDGING ANYWHERE!!! Oh my what a talent! Been coatin’ the same lashes for 15 years and I still can’t keep the stuff off my skin — NICELY DONE, you!
And btw, you are STUNNINGLY beautiful! And on top of that already phenomenal beauty, God’s bringing your hair back with NATURAL BLONDE HIGHLIGHTS ON TOP — you know, the ones we all go out and spend hundreds of dollars on? Yeah, those! How cool is that!
Praying for you, Heather! You are an absolute *delight*!

Heather, don’t worry about it. My sister-in-law had has hers come out three times because of chemo and it’s grown back. One time it did take quite awhile.

There are some that have problems, but they usually don’t grow back at all. My daughter’s close friend is one of those. She had a beautiful head of hair before having chemo for breast cancer. That was about 2 years ago. It still hasn’t grown back. They gave her a name for the condition, but I can’t remember what my daughter said it was. We are still praying that beautiful red hair comes back. And we will be praying that your spot in the front starts growing dark hair as well.

Heather, You are beautiful inside and out! Someone above wrote that having less hair emphasizes the beauty of your eyes.

For what it is worth, after chemo my hair came back curly. I think the color is the same. It is hard to know, though, because I had color applied every 6 weeks for 15 years or so. As it grows, it is straightening out to what I had before all of this started..

What does your radiation oncologist say about what you should expect? I have a distinct line in my axilla. The area that received the radiation has no hair and the area above needs to be shaved on a daily basis. I know our treatments were very different and I had blistering burns under there.

I wish I had thought of mascara when my duck fuzz started!

You are a bright spot in my day! Your faith is a comfort and a guide to me. I don’t imagine that I’ll get to meet you in person in this life. When we get to heaven, I’d like to shake your hand and hug you! I don’t have any idea why we get the particular challenges that we face in this life.
